What is the difference between lip balm, lip gloss and lipstick?
While lip balm, lip gloss and lipstick all result in beautifully plump lips, they each play different roles in lip care and make-up. A moisturising lip balm mainly protects the lips from dryness and chapping, while lip gloss adds a shiny, subtly tinted layer to enhance the lips’ natural colour. On the other hand, lipstick emphasises full coverage, providing a more dramatic and long-lasting finish.
What is the best formula for lip balm?
The ideal formula for a lip balm should contain soothing ingredients that prevent chapped lips, without feeling uncomfortably greasy or sticky upon application. If you have dry or cracked lips, look for moisturising formulas that will alleviate dryness, and soften and comfort the lips.
At Clarins, our plant-based lip balms are designed with a 99% skincare formula to coat your lips with a protective layer of moisture, while nourishing them so they stay plump and radiant. Enriched with 96% naturally-derived ingredients, including high-performing plant oils, our moisturising lip balms function as both make-up and lip care to give you the best of both worlds – effortlessly gorgeous lips that feel soft and supple.
Our lip balm formula contains a concentrated blend of fortifying and moisturising plant oils. Jojoba Oil enhances the lip balm’s nourishing properties so you’ll never have to worry about dry or cracked lips. The waxy texture of Jojoba Oil locks in hydration and shields the lips from moisture loss. It’s also loaded with anti-inflammatory benefits to soothe cracked, sunburned lips.
Apart from Jojoba Oil, our lip balms also feature Sweetbriar Rose Oil to comfort dry or chapped lips and Hazelnut Oil to preserve hydration for smoother, plumper lips. They are available in an array of beautiful shades to suit your skin tone, ranging from earthy Almond to sultry Fig.
Do I really need to use lip balm?
Yes, moisturising lip balms are essential for maintaining lip health, especially since our lips lack oil glands and are prone to cracking. You should always apply at least a layer of lip balm to keep your lips well-moisturised and nourished. A good lip balm is the secret to ultra-soft lips because it provides the necessary protection and moisture that your lips require daily. For dry or chapped lips, use a moisturising lip balm every few hours.
When should I apply lip balm?
Moisturising lip balms can be applied anytime during the day. If you enjoy wearing matte lipsticks, apply a few layers of lip balm underneath to soften and hydrate your lips before adding lipstick. Apart from being used as a primer beneath other lip make-up products, our tinted lip balms are pigmented enough to be worn on their own, especially if you desire a sweet, natural-looking sheen.
Want extra hydration? Our lip balms can also be used overnight as a moisturising lip mask, giving you plumper, more radiant lips by morning.
